How often should you maintain your locs? 🤔

The truth is, there is no universal schedule that works for everybody.

When determining the right maintenance frequency, I look at three major factors:

✨ HAIR — your texture, density, growth rate, and overall hair/scalp health.

✨ METHOD — how your locs were established and how they’re maintained. Retwisting, interlocking, crochet maintenance, etc., all affect what an appropriate schedule may look like.

✨ LIFESTYLE — and in my opinion, this is one of the MOST significant factors. How often you shampoo, how active you are, your profession, how much you sweat, your styling habits, and simply how you prefer your locs to look all matter.

That’s why I don’t believe in telling everyone, “You HAVE to get your locs done every ___ weeks.”

There are recommended timeframes, but recommendations are not one-size-fits-all. A healthy maintenance schedule should be based on the person wearing the locs—not just the locs themselves.

Education allows us to make informed decisions instead of creating unnecessary “rules” around a journey that is unique to every individual. 🌱
