Float Clue:
Next weekend, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host its annual Cornbread Festival at Mill Springs. There will be vendors, food, games, and tours of the Brown-Lanier House provided by the National Park Service.
The Mill Springs Mill grounds cover a broad and beautiful area. We would love for you to explore it all, from the cannon and the mill to the dock, the Brown-Lanier House, and the beautiful area behind the house. We are certain someone will find this awesome, sunshine-colored float hidden somewhere on the grounds!
Please remember that the float will never be hidden in an unsafe place. Be careful while hunting, and POST a photo here when you find it so others will know it has been claimed!
Lastly, please return to the area next weekend, when it will come alive with visitors, vendors, and festival activities!

If you’ve never participated in one of our float drops, here’s how it works!
We hide a custom float somewhere in Wayne County and post a clue to help you find it. Whoever finds the float first gets to keep it!
We only ask one thing: Once you find it, snap a picture and post it on our page with FOUND so everyone else knows to stop looking.
We took a little break from our float hunts this year, but we recently discovered four floats left over from last season. Rather than let them sit around, we’re putting them back into play!

Guess who’s back? Well, sort of...
We took a break from our Finder’s Keepers Float Hunt this year. As the hunt has grown, it has become increasingly difficult to find new, safe hiding places while continuing to promote the area effectively. We thought taking a year off would give us a chance to refresh and regroup.
HOWEVER, we recently discovered FOUR floats from last season that were never placed!
Over the next few weeks, we’ll hide them throughout the area, with each float helping us highlight an upcoming local event.
The first float clue will be posted tomorrow afternoon, August 23. Get ready to hunt!

📍 NEW SERIES: Kentucky Wildlands County Spotlights!
We’re kicking off our new County Spotlight Series with Wayne County, Kentucky!
Here are a few fun facts you may not know:
Named for a Revolutionary War hero: Wayne County was named in honor of General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, a celebrated officer of the American Revolution.
It’s home to one BIG waterwheel: Historic Mill Springs Mill features a 40-foot overshot waterwheel, recognized as one of the largest - and often cited as the largest operating overshot waterwheel - in the world.
Lake life is part of the landscape: Lake Cumberland forms much of Wayne County’s northwestern border, giving the county plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing, paddling and unforgettable views.
Even the county seat has a presidential connection: Monticello was named for Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia home and became Wayne County’s seat when the county was formed.
And that’s just scratching the surface of what there is to discover in Wayne County! 🎣

Around here, even the corn is working overtime in August.
It’s called corn sweat. As corn releases moisture into the air, it can actually add to that thick Kentucky humidity we all know a little too well.
Thankfully, Wayne County comes with its own cooling system. 💧
From the wide-open waters of Lake Cumberland’s deep blue waters to cold creeks, shaded streams and hidden waterfalls, there’s always somewhere to cool off.
So when the corn turns up the humidity, we head for the water.
Science says corn sweat. We say lake day.

Gotta be honest here, we’ve never actually heard them called bush crickets. But we are open for the discussion. Katydids all the way in this part of Appalachia. What do you call them where you’re from?
