Do your joints feel stiff after sitting for a while?

Your joints are designed to move. Regular movement helps maintain mobility, supports the muscles around your joints, and helps you stay active.

And you don’t have to spend an hour at the gym to make a difference.

A short walk, getting up from your desk, taking the stairs, or simply changing positions throughout the day can all add more movement to your routine.

The key is consistency. If you’ve been inactive, gradually increasing your activity is usually a better approach than going from very little movement to an intense workout.

We take a closer look at why movement is so important for healthy joints and share some simple ways to move more throughout your day.

Is there really such a thing as perfect posture?

We’ve all heard “sit up straight,” but posture is much more complicated than simply keeping your back perfectly straight and your shoulders pulled back.

Your body is designed to move—and staying in one position for too long may matter more than whether your posture looks “perfect.”

In this week’s blog, we look at:
• What posture actually is
• Why there isn’t one perfect posture
• How sitting for long periods can affect comfort
• Why movement and muscle endurance matter
• Simple ways to improve your movement habits

💪 How strong is your core?

When you hear “core strength,” do you picture six-pack abs?

Your core is actually much more than your abdominal muscles. The muscles around your abdomen, back, pelvis, and hips work together to help stabilize your body and transfer force during everyday movements.

Think about how often you use your core without realizing it:

• Getting up from a chair
• Carrying groceries
• Working in the yard
• Picking things up
• Playing with your grandchildren
• Walking or hiking
• Participating in sports and other activities

You don’t need hundreds of crunches—or a six-pack—to build a stronger, more functional core.

Simple exercises such as bird dogs, dead bugs, bridges, squats, and other strength exercises can help develop strength and control.

In this week’s Active Spine Chiropractic blog, we look at why core strength matters in everyday life and a simple exercise you can try today.

Did you know that mobility is more than flexibility?

You can be fairly flexible and still have poor mobility.

Flexibility is the amount of movement available at a joint or muscle. Mobility is your ability to control and use that movement. That’s why strength, balance, coordination, and regular movement are all important as we get older.

A simple way to work on your mobility today:

Every hour or two, get up and move for a couple of minutes. Walk around, reach overhead, gently rotate your body, or simply change positions.

You don’t have to spend 30 minutes stretching every day to support better movement. Consistency and regular movement throughout the day matter, too.

Flexibility isn’t the whole story.

As we get older, being able to move well involves more than simply being able to stretch farther. Mobility also depends on strength, coordination, balance, and your ability to control and use your available range of motion.

Think about everyday things like getting up from the floor, reaching overhead, putting on your shoes, squatting, or turning to look behind you. If these movements are becoming more difficult, your mobility may be changing.

The good news? You don’t need a complicated routine to start doing something about it.

Our latest blog explains why mobility matters as you age and shares a simple habit you can start today: get up and move for a couple of minutes every hour or two.

If you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, working from home, driving, or looking at a screen, your back may eventually let you know about it. 😣

The good news? You don’t need a complicated routine to take better care of your back.

A few simple habits can help:

✅ Change positions regularly
✅ Take short walking breaks
✅ Make your workspace comfortable
✅ Stay active outside of work
✅ Don’t ignore pain that keeps coming back

One of the best things we can do for our bodies is simply move more throughout the day.

We just published a new article explaining five simple ways to protect your spine if you spend a lot of time sitting.

💡 This week’s wellness tip: Don’t skip your recovery days!

If you’re working hard to get stronger or stay fit, it can be tempting to think that another workout is always the answer.

But your body needs recovery time to repair and adapt.

Instead of another intense workout, try giving your body a lower-intensity day:

🚶 Take an easy walk
🧘 Do some gentle mobility work
💧 Stay hydrated
🥗 Eat well
😴 Prioritize sleep

And pay attention to how you feel. If you’re consistently sore, unusually tired, or noticing a drop in your performance, your body may be asking for more recovery.

More exercise isn’t always better. Better recovery can help you stay consistent.

Your muscles need recovery just as much as they need exercise.

It’s easy to think that more workouts always mean better results. But your body needs time to repair, adapt, and recover from the stress of exercise.

If you’re noticing persistent soreness, unusual fatigue, declining performance, or simply feeling “run down,” it may be time to look at your recovery routine.

Good recovery includes more than taking a day off. Think about:

💤 Getting adequate sleep
💧 Staying hydrated
🥗 Eating enough nutritious food
🚶 Keeping up with light movement
🛌 Allowing yourself appropriate rest days

Remember: the goal isn’t to exercise as much as possible. The goal is to exercise in a way that you can consistently recover from.

We take a closer look at why recovery matters and how to recognize when your body may need more of it in this week’s Active Spine Chiropractic blog: https://activespinenc.com/muscle-recovery-exercise/
