Julia is the autistic character from Sesame Street. Representation matters and I hope she helps kids feel seen, safe and understood from the moment they walk in.

She’ll be helping with sensory haircuts, comforting nervous kids and showing families that differences are always welcome here. Julia is here for quiet comfort & a sweet reminder that love needs no words.

✨SUMMER HAIRCUTS✨

Today my Jack came home from school and his hair was WET lol

Summer can be so hard for hygiene and sensory struggles. The sweat, sunscreen, swimming, tangles & heat can make hair care feel overwhelming!

Sometimes a shorter “summer haircut” can really help. Less sweaty, easier to wash and more comfort during these hot months can make daily routines a little easier for everyone involved.

Don’t get me wrong-
long hair is great too. Every child is different, every family has their own style, and EVERY kid deserves to feel comfortable and confident in the way they look. I have some shaggy hair HANDSOME dudes come for trims and I am here for it!! Whether it’s long hair, short hair or anything in between the goal is simply happy, cared for kids and making hygiene routines feel a little less stressful during the summer months.

And if the thought of clippers or shorter haircuts feels overwhelming for your child and you that’s okay too. I try to make the experience as comfortable as possible with sensory supports like vibrating pillows & animals to hug and a private space designed to help kids and parents feel safe when big feelings present themselves.

Side note: yes, this is a high & tight on a moving target 😂🖤 you have nothing to worry about

There’s something really special about a simple resource table like this- I’m so proud to have my flyer sitting alongside so many amazing supports and services at my son’s ABA therapy center & to know that other centers nearby are sharing it too.

My 5 year old son, Jack, is the heart behind Jack’s Corner at Shear Excellence. He’s the reason this service exists & the reason I show up the way I do.

Every 3-4 weeks, I cut his hair-consistently & patiently. We’ve gone from needing a 5-point harness just to get through it, to him now sitting independently. In the beginning, we just took what we could get. Now? He’s getting designs shaved in and looks forward to checking out his design in the mirror after.

Jack is level 2 autistic, major eloper and a gestalt language processor. He communicates by scripting movies, and during haircuts he’ll usually script something at me that’s honestly pretty funny lol but also very clear that he does not want one. And even now, if I ask him ahead of time, it’s still “no way”

As his mom, I know the feeling of anxiety before any kind of self-care appointment. Haircuts, the dentist, doctor visits…even the grocery store let’s be real. But when the time comes, he knows this is part of self-care in our home. It’s non-negotiable, not because I don’t hear him, but because I know how good he feels after. And let’s be real… summers get HOT with these boys.

He will probably always be a bit of a moving target and that’s okay. We meet him where he is, celebrate every win, and keep going. And these days, he’s pretty happy we’ve upgraded from our kitchen to the space at Shear Excellence. The toy cart helps 😉 and he’s done quality control on all of those too…don’t worry.

Thank you, Jack. We are all better because you exist & that is your super power.

I can’t wait to love your babies the same & who knows- maybe they’ll be getting lightning bolts one day too 🫶🏻
