One day scrollin through these IG streets, I saw a video of an astounding dress as inspo for one of our upcoming theme shoots (oooo 👀 what we cookin up now?). I immediately fell in LOVE and told him I need her! You gotta get her for me!!! And not at all to my surprise but little did I know, my bro waved his magic camera and BOOM 💥 we were working with her, yet oblivious to me! I arrived on set and got straight to work, then properly introduced myself to everyone once the hair was done. It’s always good vibes shooting, but finding a nail friend in our bomb ass MUA Toni, vibing out with his assistant and later learning that @ was the dress designer I showed him a while back… job perks

The dope hat in this look really was key early on in deciding the shape of this hairstyle. I wanted to make sure that I didn’t have to restyle the hair in order for the hat to have a place to live.

The lil banyang in the front provided a bit of pizazz for the head on shots and could be easily flattened for the hat pics, and quiet as it’s kept 👀  I freaked that part last minute on the fly 🤣

Working with such beautiful, talented,  supportive people to create fly art could never ever feel like work…

(It for damn sure is tho and that’s why the price is the price 💁🏾‍♀️)

*Transparent Moment…

The wayyyyy you can surprise yourself when you…
1.) Take accountability for your shortcomings
2.) Give yourself grace and understanding 3.) Remember that you are still very much THEE ONE
and
4.) DELIVER!

Coming off one of of many calls with jordi, I was super excited about my part in this shoot! The hair, the nails, it all came rushing to me as I’m blessed that it always does! Come shoot day, NYC public transit was my test of faith. I HATE being late! I take professionalism extremely seriously, and it’s just not cute 😒 however abound an abysmally delayed and stalled train, there wasn’t much I could do except slay this hair as quickly as possible when I arrived, and profusely apologized to my team!

So after I shot the one on with my anxiety, I had a dialogue with myself, reminded me just how ill I am, and that everything would be ok!

This team was and always is a Godsend. I want to say thank you to everyone who gave a piece of their creativity, time, and dedication to this project, and I want to especially thank everyone for the way in which I was supported, uplifted, and the grace and understanding I was given. When we’re up and we start to adjust to the glare of stardom, I’ll be blessed to look back and say I knew you all way back when 💯

To everybody who stumbles or falls a bit on their rise to the top, did Beyonce stay down? Oh tf kay 😌

This shot of really took my breath away! When first embarking on this project, I knew that I was going to draw heavy inspo from hairstyles of the OvaHimba, a tribe of semi nomadic herders inhabiting north-western Namibia.

Himba women use a paste called Otjize on both their bodies and hair that is a mixture of fat with ground red ochre stone and sometimes the aromatic resin of the omazumba shrub. Otjize gives the women’s skin and hair it’s characteristic red glow symbolizing both blood, the essence of life, and the earth’s rich red color.

Hairstyles play a significant role within the Himba community and reflect marital status, age, wealth, and rank within the group. Hair is also seen as a symbol of fertility amongst the Himba community where thick braids and lustrous hair indicates a women’s ability to bear healthy children.

Women who have been married for about a year, or have had a child, wear an ornate headpiece called the Erembe, sculpted from sheep or goatskin, with many streams of braided hair, colored and shaped with ‘otjize’ paste. They will also be given a necklace that incorporates a cone shell, known locally as Ohumba, which is also considered a symbol of fertility.

I’ve been finding my way in this industry while exploring past and more recent influences from black culture, giving them the utmost respect. This post is long overdue but coming back from this social media hiatus, I would be remiss if I didn’t pick back up where I left off first paying homage to my muses. This project will be one of many more to come. Its such a privilege as an artist to see your vision come to life, and I am so incredibly blessed to have had the team I did to help make it all possible!
