Sophia Loren rewrote the definition of glamour in her own unmistakable image. Rising from postwar Italy to international stardom, she brought a distinctly Italian sensuality to the screen: strong features, dramatic eyes and a beauty that was powerful without feeling delicate.
And those brows... unmistakable. By the 1960s, Loren had perfected a dramatic, architectural shape: a strong diagonal rise to a high, pointed arch, then a long, descending tail. In this 1966 portrait, her angular brows echo the exaggerated wings of her liner and the almond shape of her eyes. Individual drawn strokes make them even more graphic - a texture that feels surprisingly modern today. Paired with smoky eyes and a pale lip, the look would influence generations to come.
Loren carried that individuality from Italian cinema to Hollywood, winning an Academy Award and becoming a global movie star without muting the features that set her apart.
60 years later, the blueprint remains. The brow is softer now, but that dramatic triangular shape appears almost like a photographic afterimage of the 1960s original: the high peak, sharply tapered tail and same dramatic angles.
