ARC ATHLETICS- SPORTS REHABILITATION & FITNESS TRAINING

Worth it. Tunnel to Towers 5K today. Thanks to all of the volunteers! We appreciate our first responders!

On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was working as a fitness trainer at the Goldman Sachs gym at 10 Hanover Square. We watched on the TVs as the news unfolded that two planes had hit the World Trade Center.

There were no cameras on our phones then, so I walked to Duane Reade on Water Street and bought a disposable camera. I was southeast of the World Trade Center, with debris flying in my direction. I photographed the debris, the smoke, and eventually the Twin Towers burning.

My wife was working for CNN at the New York Stock Exchange. Walking past, I saw heavily armed NYPD officers guarding the doors and figured she was safe.

The photo I posted was taken on Broadway near John Street around 9:30 that morning. With cell service down, people were lined up at payphones. What I remember most is strangers handing each other quarters so they could call their families.

At Fulton Street, I somehow caught the 2 train uptown. At 96th Street, I switched to the 1 and finally reached my wife by payphone. I got off at 110th Street to have my photos developed. When I came out of the subway, a Columbia athlete told me one of the towers had fallen. I couldn’t comprehend it. When I left downtown, both were still standing.

I went to the athletic training room at Columbia University and told my colleagues what I had witnessed. Later, I showed them the photographs.

Like so many remember, the sky was incredibly clear and blue that day. Looking up from Columbia, the only planes I saw were fighter jets.

Twenty-five years later, I think about those who were lost, their families, those who became ill in the years that followed, and the First Responders who ran toward danger.

Every time First Responders answer an emergency call, they don’t know for certain that they’re coming home.

The truth is, none of us do.
