A 9-year-old girl is dead, and her mother and stepfather are facing first-degree murder charges after prosecutors say the couple claimed she may have been struck by a car while walking the family dog. And some of the details released in this case are absolutely heartbreaking.

According to Gloucester County prosecutors, 27-year-old India Miller and 45-year-old Sean D. Scott called 911 at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, reporting that the little girl was not breathing.

🚨 THE STORY THEY REPORTED TO POLICE

According to court documents, Scott allegedly told authorities the girl had been walking the dog and may have been struck by a vehicle.

Miller reportedly told investigators she heard a loud noise resembling tires screeching before Scott went outside and found the child near a shed on their property.

Reports also state that Miller told investigators the child had said she was struck by a vehicle.

But when emergency responders took the girl to a local hospital, medical personnel reportedly observed facial trauma, bruising across her body, and other injuries that were not consistent with a vehicle crash.

The child was pronounced dead at approximately 6:42 p.m. that day.

🚨 SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE RAISED MORE QUESTIONS

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from nearby public buildings as they worked to establish what happened.

According to prosecutors, the footage showed no vehicle traffic in the area during the timeframe associated with the reported crash.

Authorities say that finding, combined with the medical evidence, contradicted the explanation that the girl had been struck by a car.

🚨 WHAT THE AUTOPSY REPORTEDLY REVEALED

The medical examiner determined that the child died from multiple blunt-force injuries and classified her death as a homicide.

The reported autopsy findings included:

• Blunt-force trauma to both eyes, with the girl’s left eye swollen shut.

• Multiple broken ribs, some reportedly in different stages of healing.

• A ruptured colon consistent with blunt-force trauma.

• Abrasions on her inner thighs and ge***al area.

• Numerous injuries in different stages of healing, which prosecutors said suggested prolonged abuse.

These findings describe far more than a single suspected impact. However, authorities have not established every circumstance surrounding each individual injury, and the charges remain allegations until proven in court.

The reported abrasions in intimate areas are also concerning, but they do not, by themselves, establish that sexual abuse occurred.

🚨 A 4-YEAR-OLD SIBLING REPORTEDLY TOLD POLICE WHAT HAPPENED

One of the most disturbing details released by investigators involves the victim’s 4-year-old sibling.

According to authorities, the young child told investigators that Scott had struck the 9-year-old girl in the face and eyes on the night of her death.

That account is part of the allegations described by authorities in the case.

🚨 INVESTIGATORS REPORTEDLY FOUND SUSPECTED BLOOD INSIDE THE HOME

During the investigation, authorities reported discovering wet children’s clothing in an upstairs bathroom bathtub, with suspected blood on the clothing.

Investigators also reported suspected blood on the tile surrounding the bathtub, as well as on a Swiffer WetJet mop and other cleaning supplies.

The discoveries became part of the investigation into what happened before the child was taken to the hospital.

The publicly reported information does not establish the final forensic testing results for every item, so it would be premature to claim that all of the material has been conclusively identified.

🚨 ADDITIONAL DETAILS FROM THE INVESTIGATION

A report published by the Courier-Post also described allegations in court documents that the home was in disarray and that smoke detectors had been disconnected, with their batteries removed.

That report further stated that Scott was accused of striking a law enforcement officer during the police response and that a court filing alleged he appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Those are additional allegations, not findings of guilt.

🚨 BOTH ADULTS NOW FACE SERIOUS CRIMINAL CHARGES

India Miller and Sean D. Scott have each been charged with:

• First-degree murder.
• First-degree accomplice to murder.
• Two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
• Fourth-degree making a fictitious report to police.
• Fourth-degree hindering prosecution.

Both were being held at Salem County Jail following their arrests, according to reports published Thursday.

The most serious charge carries the possibility of life imprisonment if a defendant is convicted and receives that sentence.
