On Friday afternoon, a man and his wife walked into the shop and asked if we had time for them to get haircuts. Madison was able to take his wife, and my next appointment wasn’t for another 45 minutes, so I invited the gentleman into my room.

As he sat down in my chair, I offered to take his hat. As I placed it on the shelf behind the chair, I noticed it said Navy Veteran.
I asked, “What did you do in the military?”

For the next 30 minutes, he told me about his military career. Getting drafted. Boot camp. Duty stations. His family members serving. His experiences and horror stories from Vietnam.

I swallowed hard when my eyes started watering, knowing that his time in the military was very different from mine. Being Navy myself, I could relate to some of the things we discussed. But what I could not relate to were his experiences in Vietnam, how he was treated when he returned from the war, the health issues he endures today, or the many people he knew who never came home.

One thing he stated multiple times was that when they told him and his buddies not to wear their uniforms in public when they returned because of differing public opinions, he wore his anyway.
He was proud to be an American. He loved his country. And even though the press was not reporting what he knew firsthand, he was proud to have served and still is today – 55 years later.

Without getting caught up in politics, I think it’s important to remember that the men and women who serve are real people. They are sons, daughters, husbands, wives, parents, friends, and neighbors. Many raised their right hand because they believed in this country and were willing to do their part.

For some, service became a career. For others, it became a chapter of their life they would carry forever. And for some, it meant never coming home.

Today, on Memorial Day, let’s pause for them and remember the ones who gave everything.

I’m not usually one to brag… but we have some pretty amazing people at Alpha Studios.

First — our clients. Megan has been bringing her boys in for haircuts for quite some time, and recently decided to take the opportunity to do something special for herself for Mother’s Day.

And second — our incredible team. Tyra absolutely knocked it out of the park with this transformation last weekend. The dimension, shine, and color story came together beautifully.

We love seeing our clients leave feeling confident and refreshed. 💇‍♀️✨
