As a molecular scientist, I spend a lot of time looking at how active ingredients interact with human skin cells at a microscopic level. And one of the most common skincare mistakes happens in the very first step: the rinse-and-run.

Laozi wrote that 2,500 years ago, and I keep thinking about it in the lab.
Most creams need an emulsifier to hold oil and water together. It's the standard solution. But emulsifiers work by breaking down the boundary between oil and water—and that's the same kind of boundary your skin barrier is built from.
So I don't build with them. I build with phospholipids, the same molecules your own cell membranes are made of, arranged in layers that mirror the structure already there.
The point was never to take something out. The point was to make room for your skin to do its own work.
