This Saturday at the Norman Farmers Market, your support made a difference beyond skincare.

As part of our commitment to giving back, 10% of our profits from market sales were donated to The Modern Aviary Foundation, helping us move one step closer to obtaining our federal 501(c)(3) status and expanding our ability to help companion birds in need.

Because of each product purchased, conversation shared, and person who stopped by our booth, we were able to make a $57 donation toward our foundation’s fundraising goal. Every dollar helps us build a stronger future for avian rescue, education, and advocacy in our community.

🌿 Tinctures 101: Folk Method vs. Ratio Method

Understanding your plant medicine — the Dunford Apothecary way.

When it comes to making herbal tinctures, there are two main approaches: the Folk Method and the Ratio Method. Both extract the healing properties of herbs — but they’re not created equal when it comes to accuracy and dosage.

Here’s a simple breakdown for my herbal community 👇✨

🌾 The Folk Method

This is the traditional, intuitive way of tincturing.
You simply fill a jar with plant material, cover it with alcohol, and let it steep.

✔️ Great for beginners
✔️ Beautiful for home herbalism
✖️ But… not precise — every plant absorbs alcohol differently, so the final strength is unknown.

This means you can’t calculate exact dosage, and every batch will vary.

🔬 The Ratio Method (Used at Dunford Apothecary)

This method measures herbs and menstruum by weight, giving you a consistent extract every single time.

💧 Example:
• A 1:5 ratio means 1 part herb to 5 parts alcohol.
• A 1:2 fresh plant tincture = super strong and highly potent.
• A 1:1 extract = clinical-grade strength.

Because everything is weighed, we know the true concentration, which means:

✔️ Reliable results
✔️ Repeatable batches
✔️ Professional-grade medicine

This is the standard used in apothecaries, herb schools, and clinical herbalism.
