I’m probably gonna get some hate for this post, but it was not the easiest task for me to paint over the murals in my first home.

I put my heart and my soul into my house and the artwork reflected that. I was a little butt hurt that I needed to paint over them and this video clip is a representation of that emotion. (Thanks Dad for recording and to my family for helping me paint the house!)

I have two main takeaways from this experience:

1) I do believe society has normalized a lack of color and personality in our homes, in our workplace, and every day life. Gray and white walls galore.

Color is an expression of emotion and can help us feel certain ways when in a space. Green is serene, yellow is happy, etc. When you have a space that is void of those colors, it is void of intentional emotion.

My house was colorful and thoughtfully designed, representing my personality. I was hoping someone else would appreciate my art and want to buy the house as is. I’ve always been a big dreamer with high hopes lol.

2) Not everyone is going to like my specific style and want to live in it. Nor can everyone see past my color and envision their lives there. A blank slate of neutral colored walls allows a potential buyer to envision their life in a house rather than envisioning themselves in what was my home.

I did shed some tears during the process mourning my house and the life that I lived there. By the end of it, I was ready to let my home go to its new owner. I did leave my fence mural and basement mural, and it turned out that my buyer loved those murals! I am so grateful that the future owner will appreciate a few of the pieces I left and will be able to make the rest of the house their own. And if they paint over them, that’s okay too!
