repost from THE REAL ORIGIN OF MEMORIAL DAY
(Created by Freed Black Americans)
They taught us Memorial Day was born in Washington…
but the truth started with ten thousand freed Black Americans
who honored Union soldiers the country forgot.
In 1865, they cleaned the graves.
They rebuilt the cemetery.
They marched with flowers and hymns through the ruins of Charleston…
and created the very first Memorial Day.
So why did textbooks erase them?
Why did the government take credit for a story Black families started?
And how many more truths have they buried?
We don’t glorify violence.
We reveal truth so history can’t repeat itself.

repost from On Memorial Day, we remember all who died in service to this nation and shine a light on Black soldiers, who fought for our collective freedom even when they were often denied their own. The Black soldiers who served with honor, even as their government refused to grant them full civil rights. The Black soldiers who sacrificed greatly even as they faced racial injustice at home.
Their fight was not only on the battlefield but for dignity, recognition, and the promise of freedom.
This , we honor their legacy, particularly as the United States gets ready to celebrate its 251th anniversary. Black Americans have fought in every major war in this country and deserve the highest level of respect, dignity, and honor.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW… NOW YOU KNOW‼️
THE TRUE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY🙏🏿
voices :
On May 1, 1865, thousands of newly freed Black Americans gathered at a former Confederate prison camp in Charleston, SC. They properly reburied 257 Union soldiers who had died in captivity, dedicating the site as “Martyrs of the Race Course.” Led by 3,000 Black school children carrying armfuls of flowers, this historic procession is recognized by historians as one of the very first Memorial Day celebrations—then called “Decoration Day.”
This weekend, we honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice, remembering the deep roots of liberation and love that started it all.
