Today marks four years since I completed chemotherapy!

And today, I’m speaking first and foremost as a breast cancer survivor.

As someone who has personally lived through mastectomy, radiation burns, ongoing reconstruction, and complications — including a postoperative infection so severe that my implant literally fell out of my chest.

So when I speak about the vulnerability involved in restorative tattooing, I know exactly what that means.

🔑 This post is NOT about saying beginners should never enter the field of ar**la restorative tattooing. Every skilled artist starts somewhere.

What concerns me is the growing number of trainings where students with little to no tattoo machine experience (including online trainings with no supervised hands-on practice) are being sent back into their communities to offer ar**la tattooing services before they have had adequate time to fully develop the necessary skills, experience, and clinical judgment.

Foundational skills should first be developed on latex or other training surfaces **not learned for the first time on a patient’s body**

The reality is that many reconstruction patients present with radiation damage, flap reconstruction, fibrosis, hypertrophic scarring, pigmentation changes, keloids, or tissue compromised by complications and necrosis.

I do not believe most students have bad intentions. Many genuinely want to help and trust they are receiving adequate preparation.

My concern is the growing commercialization of restorative tattooing and the way breast cancer patients are sometimes marketed as a “profitable niche,” instead of a medically and emotionally vulnerable population requiring technical competency and trauma-informed care.

Ethical training should also teach students how to recognize their limitations and understand when a case should be deferred to a more experienced provider.

This work is not only technical.
It is emotional!

Patients deserve providers who understand both the complexity of the tissue and the emotional weight carried into that room.
