25 years.

It’s hard to believe it has been that long.

On September 11, 2001, I was a freshman at SUA, sitting in gym class. I remember the day, but at 14 years old, I don’t think I truly understood the magnitude of what was happening. I knew something terrible had happened. I knew people were scared. But I couldn’t fully comprehend the weight of it all.

In 2019, I had the opportunity to visit the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.

I will never forget how I felt standing there.

Seeing the names. Standing where the towers once stood. Taking in the stories of the people who went to work that morning, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the families whose lives changed forever.

It hit me in a completely different way.

I wasn’t that 14-year-old girl watching something unfold that she couldn’t fully understand anymore. I was an adult, a wife, a mom, and suddenly the enormity and heartbreak of that day felt so much heavier.

25 years later, I think about the lives lost, the heroes, the families who never got to hug their person again, and a day that changed our country forever.

Some things should never become just another date on the calendar.

A little “where have I been?” update 🖤

I know I haven’t been showing up on here as much lately, but I promise I’m still very much here and still doing lots of really good hair. 🫶🏻

Life has just been a little fuller than usual.

I’ve been navigating some health things of my own, supporting my husband through some health stuff, and putting a lot of time and energy into helping Cohen transition into high school.

And when I’m behind the chair, I’ve really been trying to just be there.

Present with the person sitting in front of me. Catching up on life, talking through their hair, and making sure they leave feeling a little better than when they walked in.

And honestly, not every appointment is an Instagram-worthy transformation.

Sometimes it’s covering the grays that showed up again. 🤪 Sometimes it’s refreshing a blonde, trimming the ends, touching up regrowth or just doing the same haircut we’ve been doing because it works and they love it.

There aren’t always extensions, huge color transformations or 8 inches of hair on the floor.

A HUGE part of this career is maintenance. It’s consistency. It’s the clients who come back every 4, 6 or 8 weeks and sit in my chair year after year. It’s knowing their hair, knowing their lives, and being a little part of their routine.

And after almost 20 years behind the chair, I’ve realized those appointments are just as rewarding to me as the big transformations. 🖤

They just don’t always make the best before-and-after pictures.

And if I’m being totally transparent… sometimes I DO create something I want to photograph, give my client a hug, watch her leave and immediately think:

“CRAP. I forgot the after picture.” 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

So no, I haven’t disappeared. Sage Studio is still here, I’m still doing hair, and I still absolutely love what I do! I’m just in a season where real life has needed a little more of me, and I’m choosing to be present instead of putting pressure on myself to constantly turn my work into content.

There’s been a whole lot of beautiful hair, and even better conversations that never made it to Instagram lately.

And I think that’s okay. 🖤
But I’ll still try to remember the damn pictures. 🤪💁🏼‍♀️
