Bucky. Buck. Buck Naked.

Those are names that will always bring a smile to the faces of everyone at the Southside Barbershop.

For years, Bucky wasn’t just someone who stopped into the shop. He became part of the shop. Part of our family.

Every time Bucky rolled
His wheelchair through that door, somehow the whole atmosphere changed. He could brighten up the room, make everyone laugh, and always had a kind word for somebody. It didn’t matter if you were one of the barbers, a longtime customer, or a kid sitting there waiting for his haircut—Bucky would take the time to talk to you and make you feel like you mattered.

We joked with Bucky every week, and believe me, he could give it right back.

He was there for everything. Christmas parties, birthday parties, special events—and let’s be honest, if there was food and alcohol involved, you could pretty much guarantee Bucky was going to be there. And we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

The Southside Barbershop always tried to look out for Bucky, too. Whether it was making sure he had something to eat, a few dollars in his pocket, a drink, or just enough to help him get through another day. We took care of Bucky the best way we knew how, because he was one of ours.

But what Bucky gave us in return was worth far more than anything we could have ever given him.

He gave us laughter. He gave us friendship. He gave us memories. He gave us his kind words and those cards and notes he would take the time to write to each and every member of the Southside Barbershop. Those are things we will never forget.

Bucky, you weren’t just our number-one customer. You were our friend. You were family.

After all these years, I realize that people like Bucky are one of the reasons the Southside Barbershop has never felt like just a place to get a haircut.

It felt like home.

And Bucky, you were part of that home.

The shop isn’t going to feel quite the same without you walking through that door. We’re going to miss the jokes. We’re going to miss the stories. We’re going to miss the cards. And most of all, we’re just going to miss you.

Thank you, Bucky, for all the years, all the laughs, and all the memories.

You will always have a place at the Southside Barbershop, and you will always have a place in our hearts.

Tonight, a hush has fallen over Station 237 that no alarm bell can pierce. Jake Wilson—only 23 years old, a past member of Vigilant Hose Company #1, and cherished son of our Past Chief, current firefighter, and Chaplain Tim Wilson—was taken from us in a tragic accident. One moment he was part of our brotherhood; the next, his light was gone, and the bay doors felt colder than they ever have before.

Jake’s story is woven into the very floorboards of this firehouse. As a little kid, he learned to count by truck numbers and could roll hose long before tying his shoes. As a teenager, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with seasoned firefighters, never saying much—just doing. If a rig needed restocking, Jake’s fingerprints were already on the gear. If there was a mess, he’d cleaned it before anyone noticed. Dependable, humble, and kind: that was Jake.

What stings the most is what his 23 years didn’t get to hold—more calls answered, more lives touched, more laughter shared after long nights. Instead, we have memories that feel both precious and painfully incomplete: the quick half-smile when a job was done right, the quiet nod as the engine rolled out, the steady calm he brought when nerves were frayed. Those snapshots are now all the more priceless to every one of us who loved him.

To Tim, to the entire Wilson family, and to Jake’s friends: our hearts break with yours. No words can fill the void, but please know that this firehouse—your firehouse—stands ready to carry you through the smoke of these dark days.
