Our little Community Boutique at Black Fern is built around a pretty simple idea: keep good things in use, make them accessible, and let them do some good along the way.

Clothing in the boutique is donated by our community and available on a $5–$20 sliding scale, so pieces can find a new home instead of ending up in a landfill.

We also accept select opened or lightly used beauty products that still have plenty of life left in them. These are available for just $1 — because sometimes a product simply wasn’t right for one person, but could be exactly what someone else needs.

And those matching bottles on the shelf? They’re part of our refill program.

This month on the Black Fern gallery wall: Rowan Rathbun ✦

Rowan Rathbun is a Reno-based acrylic painter whose work explores the meeting points between spirituality, q***rness, nature, color, and surrealism.

Originally from the Deep South, Rowan began painting in 2015 as a self-taught artist and a way to give visual form to the things that felt deeply personal, spiritual, and sometimes difficult to put into words.

The collection currently hanging at Black Fern spans several eras of Rowan’s work—from earlier pieces to some of their most recent—making the wall feel almost like a little timeline of their creative evolution.

Throughout it all, their love of bold color, strange little worlds, organic forms, and surreal imagery remains unmistakable.

We’re so excited to have Rowan’s work living in the salon this month and to continue making Black Fern a space where local artists can be seen, celebrated, and supported.

We refined the perimeter, brought movement back through the shape, and added soft face-framing layers that fall naturally into place — giving her hair more body and movement without sacrificing that beautiful length.

The kind of cut that looks polished when styled, but doesn’t demand a 45-minute routine every morning.

For this model transformation, McKayla created ribbons of vivid magenta and plum against a deep, dimensional base—placed intentionally so the color changes depending on how the hair moves.

And this is exactly why we do model sessions.
They give our artists space to experiment, refine their craft, create something a little outside the everyday, and build the kind of work they want to see more of behind their chair.

McKayla has been especially drawn toward alternative color, bold placement, and looks that still feel wearable once you leave the salon.

There’s more than hair tucked away inside Black Fern. 🌿

This old trunk has become our drop-off — a little corner of the salon dedicated to taking care of our community.

If you have clothing, supplies, or other useful items to share, you’re welcome to bring them by Black Fern and add them to the trunk. From here, donations make their way to Family Soup Mutual Aid and back into the hands of our neighbors.

We’ve always believed that a salon can be more than a place you come to get your hair done.

It can be a place where you feel welcome.
A place where resources are shared.
A place where we look out for each other.
