Hi everybody! Wild Hippie here, with another science meme!

-The ribosomes are huge molecular “machines” that process messenger RNA (mRNA) They read the “code” in groups of three. Each set of three bases in the mRNA notes the amino acid needed to make the protein it codes for. The ribosome will use this to build the amino acid chain for the protein!

-In DNA the four bases are usually: Adenine (A) Thymine (T) Cytosine (C) and Guanine (G) when a gene gets transcribed for Messenger RNA, Adenine gets replaced with Uracil (U)

-The sequences UAA, UAG, and UAG are referred to as “stop codons”. This indicated to the ribosome that translation can now stop and the amino acid chain for the encoded protein is now complete!

-DNA is usually depicted as a double helix, two strands. RNA is usually depicted with one strand. While this is often the case, sometimes double stranded RNA and single stranded DNA are seen in many cases! So in this case the memes is technically incorrect when the cartoon RNA says “always”

-It’s thought that we lived in an “RNA world” ages ago before DNA. As part of this, RNA would have been the main storage system for an organism’s code. RNA’s purpose today for several cellular tasks is thought to be an echo of this particular age.

-When cells divide to form egg and s***m cells for the next generation, something amazing happens to the chromosomes, known as “crossover”. Pairs of chromosomes will shuffle around genes with each other, to create new combinations! This is to ensure that the new generation is as genetically unique as possible.

-The “telomere” is the edge of the chromosome, which is in place to help make sure a chromosome stays intact during the cell division process.
