As I prepare for a hysterectomy tomorrow and 4–6 weeks away from the treatment room, I’ve been thinking a lot about emergency preparedness as a solo esthetician.

One of the best decisions I ever made was building an emergency fund large enough to cover six months of personal and business expenses.

Not because I expected something to happen.

Because eventually, life happens.

When you’re self-employed, there is no PTO. No sick leave. No one stepping in to take over your clients while you recover.

Having that financial cushion has allowed me to focus on healing instead of panicking.

What I didn’t realize was how much I relied on creating content in real time. This experience has shown me that I need a larger content library and more social media automation so my business can continue showing up even when I can’t.

The other thing I’m grateful for? Relationships.

I’ve spent years building trust with my clients, and because of that, they’re not upset that I need surgery. They want me healthy. They want me rested. They want me to take the time I need to recover.

So if you’re a solo esthetician, don’t just prepare for growth.

Prepare for life.
