As much as I stress proper prep and a clean nail plate being the key to prevent lifting, improper prep and too aggressive prep that causes thinning can also cause peeling, cracking, lifting, breaks and chipping of the natural nails.
Handfiling, while less popular, is also an option for gel removal.

Lifting nails cause damage and for proper adhesion and retention of enhancements, including gel polish, the nail plate needs to be completely free of cuticle (dead colorless, tissue). If your nail plate isn’t free of cuticle, dust, oils etc you’re likely to experience lifting, complete pop offs, or peeling of product.
