That 94% drop did not happen because of ceremony. It happened because of chemistry. Sage leaves are packed with volatile oils — sharp, fast-moving compounds that float into the air the moment the plant starts to burn. When those particles collide with a bacterial cell, they punch through its outer shell. Without that shell, the cell falls apart. What is wild is the staying power. In that same test, the air remained mostly cleared for a full 24 hours after the smoke settled. One hour of burning. One full day of aftermath. That is not a coincidence — it is the plant doing something it has been doing long before humans figured out it smelled good. Some of the same oils found in sage smoke also appear in pine, rosemary, and thyme. Plants did not develop these chemicals for human benefit. They made them for survival — to fight off microbes, insects, and competing plants. Humans just learned to strike a match and borrow the effect. Ancient cultures on nearly every continent used smoke from aromatic plants in spaces where people gathered, healed, or prepared food. They had no microscopes. They had pattern recognition. The ritual was always the science. It just did not have a name yet. The oldest medicine cabinet was always on fire. [Z7B79]

Every year, countless wild animals face a dangerous obstacle that cuts right through their natural habitat: our roads and highways.

A highway may be necessary for people, but to a deer, elk, bear, mountain lion, or other wild animal, it can be a deadly barrier.

Wildlife crossings give animals another option.

Underpasses and overpasses can help animals move between parts of their habitat without having to cross lanes of fast-moving traffic. Wildlife fencing can also help guide animals toward these safer crossing points.

And this is not only about protecting wildlife. A large animal suddenly running onto a highway can put drivers and passengers at serious risk too.

We have built roads across forests, mountains, and open land. We can also build ways for wildlife to safely cross them.

More wildlife crossings could mean fewer animals killed on our roads and fewer dangerous collisions for drivers.

These young gorillas learned to dismantle deadly snares after losing a member of their family. 🦍💔🌿

Two four-year-old mountain gorillas, Rwema and Dukore, were reportedly observed working together to find and dismantle wire snares hidden throughout their forest territory after a family member was killed by one.

The young gorillas learned how the traps worked and were able to spring or pull apart some snares, helping reduce the danger to other members of their troop. Their behavior offered a remarkable glimpse into how quickly young gorillas can learn from threats in their environment.

✨ Did you know? Mountain gorillas are highly social animals, living in family groups where young gorillas learn important survival skills by observing others.

❤️ They were still babies—but they had already learned that the forest could hide danger, and they did something remarkable to protect their family. 🦍❤️🌿
