October calls for something a little darker. A little stranger. And maybe just a little wicked. This month's collection takes us through one night where familiar pleasures—vanilla, citrus, coffee, caramel—slowly become something much more interesting.

We begin at dusk with Va Va Vanilla by Sarah Baker Perfumes. Espresso martini, black cherry and rum set the mood before vanilla, leather and woods take us inside a hidden speakeasy. The night is young. Then comes our first questionable decision. Incident Diplomatique by Jovoy Paris pairs an oversized dose of Java vetiver with nutmeg, patchouli and sandalwood. Dry, earthy and provocative, rules suddenly feel rather optional. Ambre Latte, new from Essential Parfums, offers something comforting—or so it seems. Almond milk, roasted tonka and dulce de leche wrap around powerful amber woods and sandalwood. Sweet enough to lure you in, with enough depth to keep you there.

Then Cedrat Lova, another new release by Montale, flashes bright with Sicilian citron, bergamot and lemon before sandalwood, oud and Cuban to***co pull us toward the shadows. Now for a twist into the darkness, Crème de Menthe Café by Statik Olfactive turns an after-dinner ritual into perfume: chocolate mint melted into coffee with a splash of Irish cream. Cool, warm, boozy and deliciously unexpected. And finally, Velvet Vendetta by Sarah Baker Perfumes takes vanilla into the Nevada desert. Gunsmoke, bourbon, to***co, deadwood and molasses surround dark vanilla for a finale that's smoky, sweet and just a little dangerous.

Perfumer Félix Deschamps looked to his own experience at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans®—the roar of the engines, the rush of the race and an energy he describes as almost magical. Tart grapefruit and rhubarb race into aquatic notes before lavender, sage and an unexpected parsley accord turn things green. Vetiver, patchouli and oakmoss eventually take over, giving all that freshness an earthy finish. Bright, green and energetic—this one was built to move.
