Nobody tells you that the small steps are actually the big steps. 💡
When we don't know how to start or where to start, it's time for curiosity to take the lead—and that's exactly what zine making is all about.

Photography Without Borders is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit teaching young artists to document their world through photography. Their annual Photo Review book brings that work together, showcasing photographs and stories from youth across seven programs, from younger students picking up a camera for the first time to high school students pairing their images with writing coached this year by poet Ursula Rucker.

This year's cover belongs to Jazmine "Jazzy" Silva Sanchez, a student of the organization since 7th grade, who traveled to Mexico at 20 and documented her trip in a stunning photo series. One image, taken at a Three Kings Day celebration, made it to the front cover of this year's edition.

"Going back to Mexico really helped me gain an understanding of the culture, the traditions, and the role my culture plays in my life and why. I feel more self-assured, I feel more confident, I feel more 'me' than I did before."

What does it mean to put your work out into the world?

For Polly Gaillard, program director of Photolucida, that question sits at the heart of Critical Mass, one of the most respected fine art photography competitions in the world. Every year, photographers from around the globe submit a body of work, and two hundred jurors select the top 50 to be exhibited, celebrated—and now preserved in print.

This year is the first time Critical Mass produced a catalog, designed by Karen Greenberg and printed through Blurb's Large Order Services.

"I like things that mark history that you can hold and look at," says Gaillard. And the response shows that the artists and audience value that tangibility too.

“It feels like a university for photography, but created by and for women and mothers.”

MEMORY CULT () is a global photography community and education platform founded by writer and photographer Anastasia Pagonas. It was built specifically for the mother who craves creative and intellectual connection, but whose time and mobility are limited.

Twice a year, members from 20+ countries come together across a spring and fall semester, sharing and developing work in what one member described as “a secret place where creative imagination and struggle can live and breathe in private before becoming public.”

That work now takes physical form as MEMORY CULT Magazine, printed and shipped worldwide through Blurb.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the communities that make space for mothers to create.
