Not to alarm anyone, but the busiest season of the year is almost upon us!

And if you're a hairdresser, you know exactly what that means.

The appointment book starts filling up, everyone suddenly remembers they need their hair done, and clients who haven't visited since Easter want an appointment at 4pm on Christmas Eve!

It's that wonderful time of year when we're juggling appointments, squeezing people in, working longer hours and somehow trying to find time to enjoy the holidays ourselves.

So here's your friendly reminder to start encouraging those holiday bookings, get your diary organised and, most importantly, remember to leave a little time for yourself.

Because before we know it, we'll be standing behind the chair wondering where the entire year went!

Hairdressers, be honest. Have your Christmas appointments started filling up yet, or are your clients still convinced December is months away?

A 24-hour cancellation policy isn’t about being difficult — it’s about protecting the time we’ve set aside specifically for that client.
When someone cancels at the last minute, that appointment can be almost impossible to refill. For a self-employed stylist, that can mean losing $75, $100, $200 or more from the day’s income while the rent, stock, insurance and other overheads stay exactly the same.
And this is exactly why we need to start making deposits and advance payments the norm in our industry.
Clients already pay in advance for flights, hotels, concerts, theatre tickets and plenty of other services. Hair appointments are valuable reserved time too. Taking a deposit, card hold or payment in advance shouldn’t be seen as rude or unfriendly — it should simply be part of running a professional business.
Of course, life happens. Emergencies happen. Plans change. But clear cancellation policies and upfront payments protect both the stylist and the client, remove awkward conversations and make expectations clear from the start.
We need to stop feeling guilty for protecting our income.
Your time has value. Your appointment book has value. Your business has value.
Do you already take deposits or payment in advance, or do you still rely on a cancellation policy alone?

There are plenty of salons, stylists and barbers you could choose from, so never underestimate what it means when someone chooses you.
Behind every appointment is someone helping us pay the bills, grow our business, improve our craft and continue doing something we genuinely love.
So if we don’t say it often enough…
