Mallow comes from Malva sylvestris, a flowering plant in the mallow family. In a skincare formula, those polysaccharides contribute to the soft, cushioning feel that makes mallow especially useful when I want to add comfort without making a product feel heavy.
I tend to reach for it when skin feels tight, dry, dehydrated, or easily irritated.
You may find it in a toner or serum, and I also use it in masks when I want a little more slip and cushion in the formula.
This is one of the things I love about custom formulation. Two ingredients can both be called “hydrating,” but they do not necessarily bring the same thing to a formula.
Sometimes I am choosing an ingredient because of the way it holds water. Sometimes, it is for texture, slip, weight, or how the finished product feels on your skin.
Mallow gives me a little bit of all of those things.

Do you dry brush?
If you have one at home, I’m curious how you use it. Before every shower? Once in a while? Or are you still not totally sure what you’re supposed to do with it?
A few takeaways I think are helpful:
Dry brushing is physical exfoliation for the body.
Light pressure is enough.
Once or twice a week is a good place to start.
And after you shower, body oil goes on best while your skin is still slightly damp.
I put the full routine, plus a few dry brushing facts worth knowing, in Skin + Routine Notes on the Back Bar site if you want to learn more.

Custom means I get to adjust the formula to fit the skin in front of me. AND keep adjusting it as your skin changes.
Let me know what your skin needs. I got you!!

Jojoba. First things first: ho-HO-ba. 😂
And despite what we all call it, jojoba oil isn’t technically an oil. It’s a liquid wax made mostly of wax esters.
That chemistry is part of what makes it such a useful skincare ingredient. Jojoba works as an emollient, helping soften the skin and support moisture without the heavy finish you might expect from an oil.
I use it because it’s simple and ridiculously versatile: face, body, hands, cuticles, dry spots, and even a tiny amount through dry hair ends.
Also, now you know how to pronounce it. Which may be the most important thing you learned here today. 🤍
Making Apricot Kernel Oil for the Botanical Collection.
Apricot kernel oil is a lightweight carrier oil rich in fatty acids, including oleic and linoleic acid. It works as an emollient, helping soften the skin and reduce that dry, tight feeling without the heaviness of some richer oils.
Each bottle also gets dried calendula petals. Calendula is one of the botanicals I use throughout Back Bar, especially because of its long history of use in skin-care preparations for dry and delicate skin.
And then there’s carnelian. I choose the stone chips individually and add one to each bottle as part of the Botanical Collection. The stone isn’t there to change the function of the oil — it’s one of the details that makes this collection what it is.
So what’s in this bottle?
🤍Apricot kernel oil for lightweight moisture.
🤍Calendula petals as the botanical element.
🤍Carnelian as the stone paired with this oil.

Custom skincare is meant to grow with you, and the House Account makes that even easier.
Each month, $65 is added to your House Account to use whenever your skin or routine is ready for something next. Your credit stays there until you choose what feels right.
Use it toward a custom skincare reorder, an adjustment to a formula you already love, or the next step in your Back Bar Plan.
I keep track of your formulas, preferences, and the changes we make behind the bar, so each order can build from what we already know about your skin.
It is a simple way to build your routine over time with your esthetician still part of the process.
Ready to open yours? Send me “HOUSE ACCOUNT” and I’ll send you the direct link.
Your skin is allowed to need something different than everyone else’s.
You may not know which product makes the most sense to start with. That is exactly what the free Skin Check In is for.
Tell me what your skin has been doing, what you are currently using, and how you want your skincare to feel. I review every submission and help you choose one useful place to begin.
Your product is then made around your skin and preferences. It comes with the exact ingredient list, along with a simple explanation of why the featured ingredients were chosen for you.
I keep the full formula on your account, so reordering is easy, and future batches can change as your skin, the season, or your preferences change.
You can begin with one product and build from there, with an esthetician helping you along the way.

If your routine no longer feels right, let’s take a closer look.
Take the free Skin Check-In Quiz. Simply tell me what your skin has been doing lately, what you are using now, and what just does not feel quite right.
You’ll get an immediate first result with product recommendations. Then I’ll go through your answers, photos, and current routine myself and follow up by email and text with what I am noticing, what I would adjust, and where I think you should begin.
Take the quiz first, then decide what feels right for you.
