The sadness and shock is palpable in Spokane. It’s a weird feeling of desperately wanting to help people affected by the fire, and guilt that we were one of the lucky families that wasn’t displaced or shattered by loss.

I’ve been quiet on social media lately because it doesn’t feel right to just “get back to normal”. Even though “normal” will look different for many people in Spokane moving forward.

Vanity has quietly replaced countless skincare products for clients that were affected by the fire. We’ve cried with people. Listened to people. Held space for people. And it still isn’t enough.

Sometimes I forget to count my blessings. The magic in every day life that we take for granted. Today, I needed a reminder and that is the post.

On Saturday, August 1, 2026 everything changed for the city of Spokane, and many neighboring communities. 60,000 people are still evacuated and many of our friends, clients and colleagues lost everything they owned.

Though it was one of the scariest times in our lives, Bailey | Licensed Master Esthetician Bailey🤎 and I are fine. Our families are fine, our homes were spared, and Vanity/the Paulsen Center in the heart of downtown are untouched and safe.

Bailey was evacuated with a new baby and recovering from a C-Section, but she has an amazing and supportive family who kept them safe. We kept in touch several times and tried to calm each other down during what felt like the apocalypse.

Our home was without power as a precautionary measure for almost 24 hours, and though we have not yet been evacuated, we remain on high alert with cars packed and ready to leave as the fire is still active in a GO NOW status just 2 miles from our house.

Currently over 650 homes have been destroyed. This is the highest fire priority right now in the entire United States. The news is constantly giving instructions about what to do, as the is so massive and still 0% contained.

This is a real photo circulating from somewhere in Spokane and it unlocked all the feelings I was refusing to feel while being on high alert and in crisis.

Ashes are everywhere in Spokane.

The air hurts to breathe in. And yet today - I’m so thankful.

Thankful my home was spared.

Thankful everyone is safe.

Thankful for the first responders.

Thankful to all our friends, family, and clients who have reached out to make sure Bailey and I were safe.

And thankful that I believe in something bigger than the world that is burning.
