We are excited to introduce our next panelist for The Business of Influence on November 30: Leigh Griffin, CEO of Doll 10 Beauty, someone who has been shaping influence and growing beauty brands for over 20 years.

She spent nearly a decade at tarte, helping build Amazonian Clay Foundation and Shape Tape, and the past eight years growing Doll 10 with founder Dr. Doris Dalton across e-commerce, TV, retail, and social. She believes the best creator partnerships start with a real connection, and listening to your community matters as much as knowing your formula.

I wanted Leigh from Doll 10 on this panel because she helped build this brand on trust and community, not just products. She knows what it takes to turn an experience into something people buy, recommend, and come back to.

Doll 10 has leaned into social and creator partnerships to grow. They have a community called the Doll Squad on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, and a collaboration with viral makeup artist Erica Taylor, including her Let’s Glow Duo and Lip Wardrobe.

Doll 10 was founded by Dr. Doris Dalton, a chiropractor and cancer survivor who could not find products she felt comfortable using on fragile skin after treatment, so she made them: clinically backed, skin-loving formulas that multitask and care for the skin underneath.

Join us November 30, at Long Island Nail Skin and Hair Institute, to hear Leigh share what she has learned about turning trust into growth.

✨ Early bird tickets are still $39 through today, Monday, October 26, at 11:59 p.m.

There’s more to traditional Chinese medicine than acupuncture.

I recently met with Dr. Sophie Ren, Dr. Sophie Ren Acupuncture, a licensed acupuncturist and herbal medicine practitioner with two Long Island clinics, to learn more about traditional Chinese medicine and a treatment called moxibustion that was new to me.

Also known as moxa, moxibustion involves burning dried mugwort, an herb, to generate heat that is applied near specific points on the body. In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s used to warm the body and address imbalances in yin and yang. Ren incorporates moxa alongside acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine as part of her practice.

Ren trained in China and holds dual master’s degrees from the New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a doctorate in Oriental medicine. She’s also a direct-lineage apprentice of Li Jinli, principal disciple of renowned Chinese moxibustion master ShaoQun.
Acupuncture, another central practice in traditional Chinese medicine, uses thin needles placed at specific points on the body and is commonly sought for concerns such as pain.

Some people also explore it as a complementary approach to managing perimenopause symptoms, including sleep difficulties. Traditional Chinese medicine takes an individualized approach, with practitioners considering a person’s overall symptoms and patterns rather than focusing on one complaint alone.

I’d never explored moxibustion before, and it was fascinating to learn about another practice within this centuries-old tradition.

Have you ever tried acupuncture or moxibustion?

Big news 🎉 Ticket sales are officially open for The Business of Influence — and we’re kicking off our panelist reveals!

We’re thrilled to welcome creator Vera Sweeney to our fall Industry Night panel.

Vera has been creating content since 2005 — long before “influencer” was a job title. Over more than 20 years, she has built a loyal audience that has grown up right alongside her — women now in their 40s and 50s who trust her take on beauty and wellness. Vera has partnered with beauty brands including L’Oréal, Pantene, Clairol, Olay, Dove, and CVS Beauty, plus lifestyle names like H&M and TJ Maxx. She has been featured in NewBeauty magazine and was an original cast member of TLC’s .

You don’t have to be an influencer to have influence. As a beauty, wellness, or lifestyle professional, your expertise shapes what people buy, where they book, and whose advice they trust. And on November 30, back at Long Island Nail Skin & Hair Institute — our longtime sponsor and venue — we’ll learn from people who have mastered turning that trust into business growth.

✨ Early access tickets are $39 through Sunday, October 25.

Stay tuned for more influential panelists.

“Do you live in this neighborhood?”
“No, but I’m in a part of this community!” 🤣 (sound on)

My mom was a hairstylist, so I’ve been familiar with the beauty industry since long before I started writing about it.

I’ve spent more than two decades covering beauty as a writer and editor, and while I’ve never been the one behind the chair or in the treatment room, I have tremendous respect for the people who are.

I know how much skill, education, hard work, and dedication go into what you do. It’s a big part of why I created Pretty Local: to shine a spotlight on the talented professionals in our community, help them grow their businesses, and connect them with the people looking for their expertise.

I may not be the one performing beauty services, but I’m very much part of the community. 💗

Five years!

Five ago today, I launched LI Beauty Scene with an idea and a vision for what local beauty coverage could look like. I had no idea just how much it would grow, or how much it would evolve along the way.

What started as a place to tell stories and spotlight local businesses has become Pretty Local: a media platform, a community, and a way to bring people, businesses, and brands together.

Along the way, there have been countless stories told, incredible people met, relationships formed, partnerships created, industry events, TV appearances, speaking opportunities, awards, and a whole lot of learning as I figured out what this business could be.

Five years in, I still feel like we’re building. Because we are.

There are so many ideas I haven’t brought to life yet, opportunities I want to explore, and ways I want Pretty Local and Pretty Local Pro to continue growing. I’m proud of what we’ve created so far, but I’m just as excited about what comes next.

To everyone who has read, followed, shared, attended an event, collaborated, supported, or simply cheered us on over the past five years, thank you. You’ve helped make Pretty Local what it is today.

Here’s to five years of building something pretty special. And to everything still ahead. 🤍
