With Hillsborough County experiencing an unusual increase in locally acquired dengue infections, it’s a good time to think about prevention, not just when we’re already feeling hit with something outside of our control.

Dengue can mean days of fever, intense body aches, exhaustion, nausea and feeling completely knocked out. And because there are four dengue virus types, having one infection doesn’t necessarily protect you from the others.

🦟 3 Simple Dengue Prevention Tips:

1. Protect your skin.
Use an effective mosquito repellent and wear lightweight, long sleeves when mosquitoes are active. Aedes aegypti, the main dengue mosquito, commonly bites during daylight hours, so don’t assume nighttime is the only risk.

2. Clear standing water.
Once a week, empty, scrub,cover, or discard anything around your home that collects water, mosquitoes can breed there. Don’t overlook tiny water sources. Plant saucers, pet bowls, gutters, toys, and even bottle caps can become breeding sites, empty them regularly or keep them covered.

3. Protect your sanctuary.
Keep doors/windows screened or use air conditioning when possible, and use a mosquito net when sleeping in an exposed area, especially around dawn and dusk.
