When you first get into permanent makeup, you probably aren’t going to be booked out and making a full-time income right away.

In the beginning, you’re practicing. You’re taking models. You’re building a portfolio, learning how to work with real clients, gaining confidence AND figuring out the business side of things. 🖤

For many artists, that first year is still very much a building year.

And somewhere around that 1–2 year mark is when a lot of artists really start to feel the momentum. Their work is stronger, referrals are coming in, repeat clients are returning and they’re starting to build something that actually feels like a career.

That timeline is different for everyone. Some people get there faster, some take longer, and a LOT of artists start PMU part-time while still working another job. That is completely normal.

So if you’re six months in… or even a year in… and you’re wondering why you’re not making the money you saw somebody talking about online, don’t count yourself out.

PMU can absolutely become an amazing career, but it takes time, practice, consistency and learning how to run a business.

There are plenty of shiny objects in this industry. ✨ I’d rather tell you what building it actually looks like.

Keep going. Your first year doesn’t determine where you’ll be in year two. 🖤

There really AREN’T any. 😂

Because there is no magic timeline. It’s incredibly personal and depends on so many things.

How much do you practice?
How consistent are you?
Do you have another job?
How quickly are you building your confidence and portfolio?
Are you posting your work, getting reviews and putting yourself out there?

And here’s the part people sometimes forget…

You’re not just learning permanent makeup. You’re also learning how to run a business.

How to get clients. How to communicate with them. How to take good photos. How to market yourself. How to build trust. How to keep showing up even when your books aren’t full yet.

The technique is only one piece of it.
