I’ve been receiving quite a few questions lately about permanent eyeliner and tattooing the waterline, so I thought this was a good opportunity for a little education.

When it comes to permanent makeup, understanding anatomy is just as important as understanding technique.

The meibomian glands are located within the eyelids, with their openings positioned along the eyelid margin. These glands produce oils that help stabilize the tear film, prevent excessive evaporation, and keep the eyes properly lubricated.

This is why proper placement matters.

Permanent eyeliner should enhance the lash line while respecting the delicate anatomy of the eyelid. The waterline itself is not an area I tattoo.

Research has associated cosmetic eyelid tattooing with changes to the meibomian glands, decreased tear-film stability, and increased dry-eye symptoms

which is why understanding the anatomy of this area is so important.

There’s a difference between knowing how to perform a procedure and understanding why certain boundaries exist.

Beautiful results matter. Technique matters. But protecting the health and safety of my clients will always come first. 🤍
