Implications of Investing in War

Karen Ann Carr reporting

The United States of America recently commited to giving Israel 3.3 Billion dollars in aid to support Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's war strategy in Gaza, which has killed thousands of Palestinians and destroyed thousands of real estate.

Sadly, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jefferies announced his support for the war, which is now approaching its third year. Over half of the House Democrats revolted.

Consequences of the U.S. Congressional vote are significant. Billions are cut to from programs supporting: the hungry, the medically ill. The basic needs of United States military and Veterans has recently been ignored by the United States Secretary of War/Defense. Billions of dollars of aid has been pulled from historic black universities and colleges, Medicaid, WIC, TANF, the Department of Education, U.S. Food safety inspection serviced, child care and the other essential needs of people working to simply survive.

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program is a federal assistance initiative in the U.S. that provides financial aid to low-income families, particularly those with children, to help them meet basic needs like food and housing. TANF is designed to be temporary, with a maximum cash assistance limit of 60 months and work requirements for recipients.

The U.S. WIC program, or Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, provides nutritional support and education to low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children under five. It offers food benefits, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health services to improve the health of participants.

Has the United States Federal Government financial support to HBCU's decreased in 2026? Yes. or No

Yes, the United States Federal Government's financial support to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), through the Title III Part B Strengthening HBCUs program, has faced challenges, including a significant funding gap that has persisted over the years. This gap reflects a long-standing pattern of inequity and underfunding compared to predominantly white institutions.

There is a persistent funding gap of approximately $12.8 billion between land-grant HBCUs and predominantly white institutions. This gap reflects a long-standing pattern of inequity and underfunding.
Impact of Federal Actions: Recent federal actions have led to the termination or pause of various forms of federal support, including grants and contracts, which further complicates the financial landscape for HBCUs.

Implications of Investing in War
The funding challenges not only affect the operational budgets of working adults and HBCUs but also limit their ability to invest in infrastructure, housing, faculty salaries, and student services. This underfunding can hinder the educational opportunities available to students at these institutions but also limit the ability to invest in the infrastructure of community economic development.
