If your hamstrings always feel tight, here's something worth knowing.

Researchers put people through three weeks of hamstring stretching and measured what actually changed.

Range of motion improved. The muscle didn't. Not its stiffness, not its tension, not the force needed to move it. Mechanically it was the same muscle it had been three weeks earlier.

What changed was how much stretch they'd tolerate before it felt like too much.

So when stretching feels great for an hour and the tightness comes straight back — that's not you failing at it. That's the mechanism.

The part I find most useful: a separate study found thirty seconds of hands-on work at the hamstring attachment produced a similar increase in range. Same story — no change in the tissue itself.

It was never really about stretching harder.

If your hamstrings feel tight no matter what you do, it may be worth looking somewhere other than the hamstrings.

Two legs. Same person. About ten degrees of difference in knee flexion.

Before the knee bends, the tibia has to rotate inward to unlock the joint. Popliteus helps produce that rotation. The outer hamstring—biceps femoris—pulls in the opposite direction and externally rotates the tibia.

When that outer hamstring holds tone, it can limit the inward rotation that flexion requires.

In my practice, I measure both knees and frequently find a flexion deficit on one side. After addressing the outer hamstring, I measure again. When the range returns during the session, that tells me the restriction was soft-tissue driven—not a permanent twist in the bone.

Whether popliteus is inhibited or simply being outmatched isn’t something I can determine directly. That part is the proposed mechanism, not a measured finding.

Research has documented a right-sided external-rotation bias in healthy people. My hypothesis is that time spent driving may contribute—but no published study has tested that idea, and right-leg dominance could explain the same pattern.

So I hold the hypothesis loosely and keep measuring.

The ball is plastic. The injuries aren’t. 🏓

Pickleball may look friendly, but quick lunges, sudden stops and awkward backpedaling can expose patterns your body wasn’t prepared to manage.

Common trouble spots include the ankles and Achilles tendons, knees, elbows, shoulders, wrists and hips.

Before you play:
• Use a dynamic warm-up—not just a few static stretches.
• Wear court shoes designed for lateral movement.
• Practice controlled lunges, deceleration and balance.
• Increase playing frequency gradually.
• Don’t keep playing through sharp pain, swelling or instability.

The goal isn’t to avoid movement. It’s to prepare your body for the movement the game demands.

A thing that surprises people on the table: I'll often spend most of a session somewhere other than where it hurts.

That's not evasion, and it isn't a technique I'm attached to. It's what the assessment usually points at.

Tissue is continuous. Tension gets distributed. The place that hurts is frequently the place that's been compensating longest — it's loudest because it's tired, not because it started anything.

If you've had work done that felt great for a day or two and then went back to how it was, that pattern is worth paying attention to. Temporary relief at the painful site, without a change further up or down the chain, tends to repeat.

Bring the whole history. The old injury you think is unrelated usually isn't.

Picture a bicycle wheel.

The hub doesn't sit on the bottom spokes. It hangs — suspended in the balanced pull of all of them at once. That's how something light enough to lift with one finger carries your whole body weight.

Now loosen one spoke.

The wheel goes out of true. But here's the part worth sitting with: the wobble doesn't show up at the spoke you loosened. It shows up somewhere else on the rim.

Swipe to the second image. That's called a tensegrity — rigid bars that never touch each other, floating, held apart and held together by tension in the fine cables. Same principle as the wheel, in three dimensions.

There's a good argument that bodies work more like that than like a stack of bricks. Bones suspended in a continuous web of soft tissue, the whole thing under balanced tension, shape held by the pull rather than the pile.

Which would explain something people notice all the time: the place that hurts and the place that actually changed aren't always the same place.

It's why I look at how the whole thing is strung before deciding where to work.

Genuine question for the comments: what's the strangest thing you've been told about your own back?

So far I've collected "it's just what happens after 40," "you have the spine of a 70-year-old," and the all-time champion — "you should probably stop lifting things."

Saturday is when a lot of Wilmington bodies get asked to do something they haven't done all week.

Yard work. Moving furniture. Six hours on the boat. A first run in a while.

The load itself usually isn't the problem. The problem is the mismatch — five days of sitting followed by four hours of bending, with nothing in between to bridge the two.

Tissue adapts to what it does regularly. It handles what it's prepared for. Sudden novel load on an unprepared pattern is where things tend to go sideways, and it often shows up Sunday rather than Saturday.

Not a reason to avoid the yard. Just a reason to warm into it, break it up, and stop before the point where you're proving something.

When people hear "soft tissue work," they usually picture muscle.

Most of what I'm working on isn't muscle. It's the connective tissue around, between and through it — collagen fibres for tensile strength, elastic fibres for recoil, and fibroblasts, the cells that build and rebuild the whole arrangement based on what you regularly ask of it.

That last part is the interesting bit. This tissue isn't inert packing material. It remodels. It lays down more fibre along lines of habitual stress, and it reorganises when those demands change.

Which is why a body that sits eight hours a day is not the same tissue as one that doesn't — and why changing it takes more than one session and more than passive treatment.
