HOW DOES CRYOABLATION WORK?

Cryoablation works by using extreme cold to destroy targeted tumour tissue. Here’s how the treatment works:

❄️ 1. Imaging Guidance
The Interventional Radiologist uses imaging to precisely locate the tumour and plan the treatment.

❄️ 2. Probes Are Positioned
Very thin Cryoablation probes are carefully guided through the skin and into the tumour.

❄️ 3. The Tumour Is Frozen
The probes create an intensely cold area around their tips, forming an ice ball that encompasses the targeted tumour.

❄️ 4. Freeze-Thaw Cycles
The tissue is frozen and thawed in controlled cycles. The extreme temperatures damage and destroy the targeted tumour cells.

❄️ 5. The treatment Is Monitored
Imaging allows the treatment zone to be monitored throughout the procedure, helping the specialist target the tumour while working to protect surrounding structures.

Cryoablation is a highly targeted treatment, but it is not a one-size-fits-all cancer treatment. Patient selection and careful treatment planning are essential. WhatsApp our team today to find out if you are a canidcate: +2771 471 9080.

Dr Gercois Human, who performed South Africa’s first Cyroablation procedure for the treatment of thyroid carcinoma earlier this year, explains to us what exactly Cryoablation is, and how it uses extreme cold to destroy targeted abnormal tissue.

WHAT IS CRYOABLATION?

Cryoablation is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to destroy targeted cancerous tissue.

Instead of removing the tumour through conventional surgery, a specialist Interventional Radiologist guides thin probes directly into the tumour using imaging guidance. The probes then create a controlled zone of freezing around the tumour, destroying the targeted tissue. The aim is to treat the tumour precisely while limiting damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Because Cryoablation is performed through small needle punctures rather than a large surgical incision, it may offer a less invasive treatment option for carefully selected patients.

But Cryoablation is not suitable for every cancer or every patient. Whether it is an option depends on factors such as the type, size and location of the tumour, as well as the patient’s overall treatment plan.

If you would like to know if Cryoablation is an option for you, please WhatsApp our team on: +2771 471 9080.

Dr Dale Creamer wil dié prentjie verander.
