The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament says the motion of no confidence against National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza forms part of a calculated political strategy aimed at destabilising the party and the Government of National Unity (GNU).

On Tuesday, Deputy Speaker Annelie Lotriet approved a request by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to schedule the motion for debate in Parliament.

ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli says the party is confident that GNU partners will help it defeat what he describes as a โ€œfrivolousโ€ motion.

The EFF argues that Speaker Didiza failed to properly defend Parliament after she did not oppose President Cyril Ramaphosaโ€™s legal application to pause impeachment proceedings.

Meanwhile, the MK Party has demanded clarity on an independent legal opinion obtained by Didiza, which informed her decision to comply with a court ruling.

Ntuli says opposition parties are attempting to exploit internal divisions within the GNU and target individual leaders as part of a broader political agenda.

He added that the ANC will begin lobbying GNU partners this week, saying at least 42 MPs are needed to block the motion.

The ANC maintains that there are no grounds for Didizaโ€™s removal and insists the motion is intended to distract from parliamentary work.

Thousands of Malawian nationals have expressed exhaustion and frustration after spending another night sleeping outdoors while waiting for travel documents to leave South Africa.

The Department of Home Affairs has experienced a surge in foreign nationals seeking documentation that will allow them to cross the Beitbridge border as repatriation efforts continue.

More than 8,000 Malawian nationals queued outside the Home Affairs office in Musina on Tuesday before being moved to the Musina Showgrounds, where they spent the night.

Many had hoped Tuesday would be their final night sleeping outside after previously spending Monday night on the pavement outside the department's offices.

Instead, they were accommodated at the showgrounds, where they slept on dry ground with limited shelter as overnight temperatures dropped to around 13ยฐC.

Some said they had no blankets, toilets, bathrooms or access to clean drinking water, relying on firewood to keep warm through the night.

One Malawian national appealed for assistance, saying they simply wanted to receive their documents and return home.

The group is expected to return to the Home Affairs office on Wednesday as processing continues.

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is expected to resume in Pretoria on Tuesday with a new witness as it continues investigating allegations of criminal infiltration within South Africa's law enforcement agencies and alleged political interference.

The commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during a media briefing in July last year.

The inquiry is examining claims that organised crime syndicates may have infiltrated senior levels of law enforcement and influenced policing structures.

Among those named in the allegations are suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya and suspended KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head General Lesetja Senona.

Attempted murder accused Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and murder accused Katiso "KT" Molefe have also featured prominently in testimony relating to alleged corruption involving law enforcement agencies.

The commission has fewer than 30 days remaining to complete its work before submitting its findings.

Proceedings are expected to continue with fresh evidence as investigators seek to establish the extent of the alleged criminal networks and possible political interference within policing institutions.

Senegalese police fired tear gas on Monday to disperse protesters outside parliament as lawmakers debated a controversial constitutional amendment aimed at expanding parliamentary powers while reducing those of the president.

The proposed reform has triggered strong opposition from civil society groups and political parties, who accuse parliament speaker and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of attempting to consolidate power through institutional changes.

Critics argue that the amendments could disrupt the balance of power between the presidency and parliament, deepening political tensions in the country.

The dispute comes amid growing friction between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Sonko, whose political relationship has weakened since the election.

Sonkoโ€™s dismissal in May highlighted divisions over governance reforms and the countryโ€™s ongoing economic pressures, including a mounting debt crisis.

The ruling Pastef party, led by Sonko, has driven the push for constitutional changes, including a controversial clause that would prevent a sitting president from serving as leader of a political party.

Faye, who was elected two years ago with Sonkoโ€™s backing, is no longer formally part of the party but remains central to the political dispute.

A coalition supporting the president has called for the immediate withdrawal of the bill, insisting that Faye must be allowed to fully exercise presidential powers.

The situation continues to escalate, raising concerns about political stability in Senegal as tensions between key political figures intensify.

Long queues formed at Durban's Old Drive-In site on Monday as a large-scale voluntary repatriation operation involving more than 19,000 foreign nationals continued under heightened police monitoring ahead of the planned nationwide demonstrations on 30 June.

The Old Drive-In site has been converted into a central coordination hub, primarily processing Malawian nationals who have opted to return to their home country.

Hundreds of people moved through organised queues as officials processed documentation before directing them to buses waiting at the facility. The operation continued throughout the day in batches as authorities managed the high volume of people.

Police officers were also seen inspecting buses entering and leaving the site as part of ongoing security measures linked to the repatriation process.

Despite the large crowds, the atmosphere remained orderly, with officials coordinating transport while maintaining security around the facility.

The operation comes as the March and March movement and other civil society organisations prepare for nationwide demonstrations calling for stricter action against undocumented foreign nationals.

Government has reiterated that while the constitutional right to peaceful protest will be respected, any violence, intimidation or attacks targeting foreign nationals will not be tolerated.

The Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has sentenced Ugandan national Richard Juuko, 53, to an effective 18 yearsโ€™ direct imprisonment after being convicted on multiple counts of fraud and money laundering linked to a sophisticated tender scam.

The court heard that between 2020 and 2022, Juuko targeted businesspeople in Limpopo using a coordinated email fraud scheme, impersonating government departments and sending fake tender award notifications.

Fraudulent emails were sent using official-looking letterheads and logos of departments such as Water and Sanitation, Mineral Resources and Energy, and other provincial structures.

Victims were instructed to purchase goods and transfer funds into banking accounts controlled by associates of the accused, believing they were fulfilling legitimate government contracts.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the scam resulted in losses of more than R429,000.

Juuko was convicted on five counts of fraud and five counts of money laundering under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

The court imposed a structured sentence, resulting in an effective 18-year prison term after parts of the sentences were ordered to run concurrently.

The NPA welcomed the ruling, saying it would serve as a deterrent to future offenders and help restore public confidence in the justice system.

Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Ivy Thenga praised the prosecution and investigating teams for securing the conviction.

Scores of hostel dwellers, including izindunas and amabutho, took part in a final Soweto protest on Monday ahead of the self-imposed 30 June deadline, calling for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.

The march started at Jabulani Amphitheatre and ended at Protea Glen Police Station, with protesters carrying traditional weapons such as shields and sticks as they voiced concerns over unemployment, crime and service delivery.

Participants said they were frustrated by rising unemployment and social challenges, claiming that local citizens are being sidelined in favour of foreign nationals in jobs and opportunities.

One resident, Anna Dhlomo, said communities are struggling with unemployment and youth substance abuse, urging government to take stronger action to secure the future of South African children.

Hostel leaders also echoed calls for prioritising South Africans in employment and education, while emphasising that the march would remain peaceful.

Authorities noted concerns around the carrying of traditional weapons, but organisers insisted these items hold cultural significance and were not intended for violence.

Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana said police were monitoring the situation closely and confirmed that the protest remained under control.

He added that officers would continue operations beyond the protest deadline to ensure ongoing public safety and stability in affected areas.

Despite heightened tensions, police say businesses in the area continued to operate normally during the demonstration.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) says three legally approved marches are expected to cause significant traffic disruptions across the Johannesburg CBD, Hillbrow and parts of Midrand on Tuesday.

Thousands of demonstrators are expected to participate in separate marches focusing on community safety, illegal immigration and youth employment.

Motorists have been warned to expect road closures, rolling roadblocks and traffic delays between 7:00am and 4:00pm as law enforcement manages the demonstrations.

The largest march, organised by the March and March movement, is expected to attract about 5,000 participants who will walk from Beyers Naudรฉ Square to Constitution Hill to hand over a memorandum on inner-city safety and access to public services.

Another march will proceed to the Department of Home Affairs, where demonstrators intend raising concerns over illegal immigration policies.

In Midrand, the Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement will march from Dale Road to the Sandton Plant Hire offices, calling for increased employment opportunities for local youth.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling through Pretoria's city centre have also been advised to expect major traffic delays as supporters of the March and March campaign gather at Church Square before marching to the Sunnyside Police Station.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department and the South African Police Service will be deployed along the route to manage traffic, monitor the demonstrations and maintain public safety.

Authorities have urged motorists to use alternative routes where possible and to comply with instructions from traffic officers throughout the day.
