Perspective
This is post serves as education and not to guilt anyone in particular. When the hair and beauty industry complain about high cancellation rates. One would think my R280/R310 appointment doesn’t make a difference. “I just cancelled once.” “It was out of my control.” This is a record of my cancellations from just the 24/11 to next week. Income I’ve lost that I couldn’t fill due to last minute cancellations. Clients who just didn’t arrive. R7k is a lot of money to lose. When supporting a small business, you are effectively paying a salon owners salary.
Our expenses don’t change and decrease because someone cancelled. Rent is the same, car payments and insurances are the same. Regardless of cancellation policies, I think we have come to a point where respect of the time that people sell should be acknowledged.
I want to share this out of awareness. Be mindful when just cancelling this December or coming to an appointment and deciding that you are not going to have everything you booked. We have all turned work away to accommodate your bookings.
Not only is this disrespectful to somebody else’s time , as we know the age old adage: “you won’t do that to a doctor”, but you put your stylist, beauty therapist or nail tech under a lot of mental pressure. It is a shorter working month to cover expenses. People go away between Christmas and new year. It’s not that easy to just quickly find clients in an over saturated market to make the funds you need to pay bills as well as have an enjoyable Christmas. Furthermore, a stressed stylist/therapist is no good to anyone.
Take these 4 points away from this post.
1. As far as possible do not cancel. Honor everything you booked. Make your plans around your bookings. When 10 people have the same mentality, it is a huge loss of income.
2. If you absolutely have to cancel, pay your service provider. Regardless of policy it’s the right thing to do.
3. Be mindful that even people working in big salons earn commission. Even though you don’t see the face that you cancelled with, someone has lost the potential to earn money.
For me personally, I’m tired. Tired of talking about the same thing over and over. If you still feel it’s your right to cancel last minute or not have everything you booked for, that’s cool. We may just have to relook at the terms of our client/ therapist relationship and whether it’s viable to take it into 2026.
I’ve said this so many times. Can we just be Lekker!
