RMD Turns 65: Celebrating Richard Mofe-Damijo, Nollywood's Timeless Legend

Veteran actor, lawyer, journalist, and former public servant, , popularly known as RMD, is celebrating his 65th birthday today, July 6, 2026.

Born on July 6, 1961, in Aladja, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, RMD has enjoyed an outstanding career spanning more than four decades. His remarkable contributions to journalism, law, politics, and the entertainment industry have earned him a place among Nigeria's most respected and influential personalities.

Early Life and Education

RMD attended Midwest College, Warri, and Anglican Grammar School before studying Theatre Arts at the . He later obtained a Law degree from the and was called to the Nigerian Bar. Before becoming a household name on screen, he worked as a reporter for Concord Newspapers and Metro Magazine.

Rise to Stardom

RMD rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s through the hit NTA television series Ripples and Checkmate, where his portrayal of Segun Kadiri made him one of Nigeria's most admired television stars.

He later transitioned to Nollywood, becoming one of the defining faces of the VHS era before making a successful comeback during the New Nollywood movement.

Some of his most notable films include Diamond Ring (1998), The Meeting (2012), The Wedding Party (2016), Merry Men (2018 & 2019), Love Is War (2019), Fine Wine (2021), Swallow (2021), The Black Book (2023), and Christmas in Lagos (2024). He has also produced several acclaimed projects, including The Mayors and The Return.

Awards and Recognition

Over the years, RMD has received numerous honours, including the AMAA Best Actor in a Leading Role, the AMAA Lifetime Achievement Award, and the AMVCA Industry Merit Award, alongside veteran actress .

Public Service

Between 2009 and 2015, RMD served as Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, where he championed initiatives such as the Asaba Film Village project and promoted Delta State as a major destination for filmmaking and tourism.

Family

RMD was previously married to the late journalist and publisher May Ellen "MEE" Mofe-Damijo. He is now married to media personality Jumobi Adegbesan, and together they have a beautiful blended family.
