Thirteen (13) Year Old Girl Allegedly Involved In Prostitution & Drug Dealing: in Durban - KZN

Sensitive information has been withheld to protect the identity of the minor. Publication of this report was delayed pending investigation.

A 13-year-old Grade Seven pupil has allegedly disclosed her involvement in a network linked to the distribution of drugs and the provision of sexual services in the eThekwini Region in KZN.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) has handed over a 5-minute and 5-second (5:05) BodyCam recording to detectives attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The footage, recorded on BodyCam Device 089, was captured when a female Reaction Officer responded to a primary school in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, following concerns raised by the principal and two female educators.

According to the educators, they had become increasingly concerned about the learner’s behaviour and activities over a period of time.

On the day of the incident (date withheld) staff allegedly observed unknown men stopping in a vehicle near the school fence and handing items to the learner. Fearing that the activity could place the child and other pupils at risk, the school contacted the RUSA Headquarters.

A female Reaction Officer was dispatched to the school and met with the educators and learner in the administration office.

During the interaction, the learner allegedly removed suspected drugs from her socks and handed them over. She then confirmed that she had been concealing drugs in different areas within the primary school.

The 13-year-old allegedly told the Officer that she had been recruited by friends to distribute Co***ne, Rock and Mandrax within the eThekwini Region. She further claimed that she had previously been apprehended on four (4) occasions but had not been detained or criminally charged for drug dealing.

During the conversation, the child allegedly disclosed that she had been delivering drugs directly to residences and visiting hotels where she provided sexual services.

She allegedly claimed that other females were involved in the activities and had encouraged her to participate.

According to the learner, money, power and respect were among the reasons she became involved. She also allegedly claimed that another minor, reportedly aged 11, was part of the group.

The child further alleged that she had previously been hospitalised after swallowing drugs.

The complete BodyCam recording has been handed to specialised SAPS detectives and may assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the allegations and identifying any individuals who may have been involved.

Reaction Unit SA has deliberately withheld the name of the school, the identities, images and other sensitive information.
