Glycans for cellular communication.

06/10/2026

🏠 YOUR BODY IS THE HOME YOU LIVE IN

We now understand that the human body is made up of around 37 trillion cells.

💡 Fun fact: If all those tiny cells could be placed end-to-end to form one long string, it has been estimated that they would circle the Earth nearly 19 times! 🌍

And every cell is like a tiny, self-sufficient city — with its own infrastructure, power stations, transport systems and molecular workers carrying out incredibly complex jobs every second.

But just like a city, every cell needs the right resources — and it needs to communicate.

🔹 Cellular communication is fundamental to how our bodies function.

One fascinating area of nutritional science is glycobiology — the study of glycans and their role in cellular communication.

Our modern diets may not always provide the variety of nutrients our bodies need.

So where do we start?

🥦 With what we eat.

Our ancestors could eat many fruits and vegetables fresh, naturally ripened and close to where they were grown. Today, produce may be picked before full ripeness and transported and stored for extended periods.

Getting a wide variety of fresh, nutrient-rich foods can be expensive — and growing your own takes time.

Is there another option?

Mannatech, pioneers in nutritional glycobiology, developed Ambrotose®, a glycan-based nutritional supplement designed to complement the modern diet.

🌿 Weekly Reflection

A quote from a best-selling book says:

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

Without knowledge and understanding, the implications of our choices—good or bad—aren’t always clear. And without understanding, how can we consistently make wise decisions?

Think about your home.

Whether it is a magnificent mansion or the humblest of homes, we instinctively protect it from the elements, storms, fire and other threats. We lock the doors. We repair damage. We maintain it.

But what about the home you live in every moment of every day—your body?

Your body is an incredibly complex living system, designed to protect, repair and maintain itself.

Yet every day it faces challenges from our environment, our food and lifestyle, stress, chemicals and much more.

Do we give our bodies the same attention and protection we give our homes?

What can we do to better protect the “home” we live in?

That’s a conversation for next week. 🌿

Knowledge creates understanding.
Understanding can lead to wiser choices.

Your cells have a language of their own… 🧬

In our last post, we looked at the incredible complexity of the trillions of cells that make up our bodies—and how important communication between those cells is.

One fascinating part of this communication system is the glycocalyx: a carbohydrate-rich layer on the outside of our cells.

It contains chains built from different sugars called glycans.

There are 8 commonly discussed glycan building blocks:

🔹 Glucose
🔹 Galactose
🔹 Mannose
🔹 Fucose
🔹 Xylose
🔹 N-acetylglucosamine
🔹 N-acetylgalactosamine
🔹 N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid)

These building blocks can be combined in many different ways, contributing to the structures involved in cell-to-cell recognition and communication.

And here's the fascinating part…

👉 The structure of the glycocalyx is incredibly complex—almost like a biological identification and communication system surrounding each cell.

So when we talk about glycans, we're talking about much more than simply “sugar.”

We're exploring one of the remarkable ways our cells recognise, interact and communicate with their environment.

The better we understand our cellular language, the better we can appreciate the incredible design of the human body. 🧬✨

Your body is made up of trillions of incredibly complex cells, each carrying out specialized tasks every second of every day. But for the body to function efficiently, these cells must constantly communicate with one another.

This communication takes place through glycans – unique sugar structures that coat every cell in the body. Often called the “alphabet of life,” glycans help cells identify each other, send messages, coordinate immune responses, support repair processes, and maintain healthy function.

From energy production to immune defence and tissue renewal, effective cellular communication plays a vital role in overall wellness.

Modern lifestyles place increasing demands on our bodies, making good nutrition more important than ever. Your cells rely on essential nutrients to help support the remarkable communication network that keeps your body working in harmony.

Did you know? Every cell in your body is coated in glycans, and scientists continue to discover just how important these tiny structures are to health and wellbeing.

🏙️ YOUR BODY IS A CITY OF BUSY CELLS

Think of a cell as a tiny, incredibly busy city.

It has power plants, factories, recycling centres, highways, delivery systems and a control centre — all working together every second of every day.

And your body has about 37 trillion of these busy cells working together to keep you functioning. 🤯

🚚 MOLECULAR HIGHWAYS

Motor proteins such as kinesin travel along microscopic tracks inside the cell, taking around 100 steps per second while carrying cargo that can be many times their own size!

♻️ A BUILT-IN SELF-DESTRUCT SYSTEM

When a cell is damaged beyond repair, it can activate apoptosis — programmed cell death. The cell systematically dismantles itself in a controlled way, helping protect the surrounding tissue.

🔄 A CITY THAT NEVER STOPS REBUILDING

Your body replaces roughly 330 billion cells every day — that's around 3.8 million cells every second!

Think about that for a moment...

37 trillion cells.

Millions replaced every second.

Countless microscopic jobs happening around the clock.

Your body isn't simply a collection of parts.

It is an extraordinary, constantly communicating, constantly rebuilding living system.

✨ Small cells. Massive teamwork.

Our Bodies Are Facing More Challenges Than Ever

In our recent posts, we’ve been looking at the many challenges our bodies can face every day:

• Environmental toxins and pollutants

• Heavy metals

• Chemicals in our surroundings

• Medicines and other substances

• Stress and lack of rest

• Highly processed foods

• Poor eating and drinking habits

• And so much more…

Our bodies have an amazing ability to maintain, repair and restore themselves. But they need the right nutritional building blocks to do their work — including vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, micronutrients and other essential nutrients.

At the same time, the way we farm, store and process food has changed dramatically. Convenience foods are everywhere, and our dietary habits and recommendations have changed over the years.

For many people, this can make maintaining a healthy weight, managing everyday symptoms and supporting overall wellbeing increasingly challenging.

So perhaps it’s time to ask:

Are we giving our bodies the support they need to do what they were designed to do?

In our previous post, we asked about cellular communication.

Now we’re going to take a closer look at an important part of that conversation:

GLYCANS

What are they?

Why are they important?

And what role do they play in how our cells communicate?

The conversation continues…
