HOW CAN AN EXECUTIVE BE SWORN IN WHILE A PETITION IS STILL PENDING?

The recent decision to swear in the newly elected UNZADESA executive raises serious questions about the University of Zambia's commitment to transparency, accountability and due process, particularly when a petition challenging aspects of the election process is still pending.

The question that stakeholders are asking is simple: How can an executive be sworn in when the electoral process is still being constitutionally and formally questioned?

A petition is not merely a complaint to be ignored. It is a formal mechanism through which students and other stakeholders can raise concerns about an election and seek clarification, investigation or appropriate remedies. Where legitimate concerns have been presented, it is reasonable to expect the relevant authorities to address them before taking steps that may appear to bring the electoral process to a final conclusion.

The concerns raised regarding the recently conducted online elections include reports of student numbers allegedly showing as having already voted before the respective students had cast their votes, among other concerns. These issues deserve to be properly investigated rather than dismissed.

This is not about targeting individuals who have been elected. It is about protecting the credibility of the Institution and ensuring that whoever assumes office does so under a process that stakeholders can trust.

What message does the University send to students when an executive is sworn in while a petition concerning the election remains unresolved?

Does the swearing-in mean that the petition has been considered and rejected? If so, where is the official communication explaining the decision? If the petition has not yet been determined, why proceed with the swearing-in before the concerns are addressed?

Students deserve answers.

A credible electoral system must not only produce leaders; it must also provide confidence that the process used to produce those leaders was transparent, fair and accountable. Where questions arise, the appropriate response should be investigation, communication and resolution, not silence, as things stand we are in limbo.

The University has an opportunity to demonstrate institutional maturity by clearly explaining the basis upon which the swearing-in proceeded and by providing stakeholders with the outcome or status of the petition.

Leadership should not only be about occupying an office; it should also be about the legitimacy and confidence that comes with the process through which that office was obtained.

We therefore call upon the relevant University of Zambia authorities to provide clarity on the status of the petition, the concerns raised, and the basis upon which the swearing-in was allowed to proceed.

Students deserve transparency.
Stakeholders deserve accountability.
The electoral process deserves credibility.
