One of my favorite sayings is,“You don’t know what you don’t know” right?? Using 17+ products a day on my hair, skin and face, I never stopped to consider whether or not they were safe, never once questioning words I couldn’t pronounce. It wasn’t until a friend opened my eyes to Beautycounter that I started to dig a little deeper and educate myself in this area of my overall health & wellness...
• I learned that there has not been a federal law passed governing the personal care industry since 1938.
• That the European Union currently bans nearly 1400 toxic chemicals, while the United States bans only 11.
• That 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer.
• That our children’s generation is the first to be sicker and die younger than their parents.
• And that there are 85,000+ chemicals on the market with thousands being added each year – of which 80% of these chemicals have never been tested for human safety.
• Many of these chemicals linked to breast cancer, learning disabilities, infertility, autism, hormone disruption and other health issues are allowed in the products we use every day. So I started to check the safety ratings of my products using an app called Skin Deep (created by the Environmental Working Group). I was appalled that so many of the products I was using daily had a rating of 6 or higher (10 being the worst). I learned that several of the products I had been using contained parabens (estrogen mimickers), formaldehyde releasers and other known cancer causing carcinogens. This got me fired up, but then I found Beautycounter – an information first, products second kind of company devoted to safety, transparency and performance. Our mission is to get safe products into the hands of everyone and to effect change all the way to Washington DC in an effort to update our current 1938 law to make it more health protective. We want to bring awareness to people in our communities who may have no idea what harmful chemicals may be lurking in their personal care products. We’ve banned more than 1500 ingredients setting a new standard of safety in an industry that is highly unregulated – all while ensuring our products perform as well as any luxe shampoo, lipstick or oil on the market. We’ve also partnered with companies like J.Crew and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop.com and soon to be Target – these companies support our mission - making safer beauty more accessible. So I invite you to ask questions and begin educating yourself so you can start making safer choices for you and your family. Be curious, read labels, empower yourself with information! Remember it’s all about progress, not perfection. You don’t know what you don’t know, right?
